The fresh air that we breathe and use to fill our scuba tanks contains 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. At the time of filling the cylinder, the amount of oxygen is increased and the amount of Nitrogen is reduced. The reduced amount of nitrogen in the mix allows the diver to extend his dive time, reduce the surface interval, and reduce the risk of decompression sickness. Many divers report feeling less tired when using Nitrox.
The Enriched Air Nitrox course is only a half-day in the classroom which involves learning how to plan dives, manage your oxygen exposure, and analyzing your cylinder contents. After completing the theory and analyzing your Nitrox cylinder you can be certified without even making the dives. Usually, most students prefer to actually make the dives the following day but if you are short of time and need the certification quickly, then just half a day in the classroom is enough.
