The IDC course takes your skills from the Divemaster level to an instructor level, equipping you with the techniques and knowledge needed to teach PADI courses and pass the PADI IE. You will be tested on your ability to teach in the classroom, confined water, and open water. The course also includes a rescue evaluation and an 800-yard swim using a mask, snorkel, and fins, along with demonstrations of confined water skills.

The PADI Dive Instructor Course, also known as the Instructor Development Course (IDC), is the cornerstone of PADI professional instructor training. You can start with an IDC preparation course before moving on to the PADI IDC Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Often, both the IDC Prep and the main IDC training are combined to provide comprehensive pro diver training, significantly enhancing your chances of passing the Instructor Examination (IE).
Upon completing your IDC training and passing the PADI Instructor Exams, you will become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). This certification allows you to teach the full range of PADI courses, from PADI Discover Scuba Diving up to the PADI Divemaster level. This is the most sought-after qualification by dive centers looking to employ dive professionals.
Upon completing the PADI IDC program and passing your Instructor exams you'll be awarded a PADI Pro OWSI Instructor certificate- this permits you to work as a dive instructor anywhere in the world teaching all levels of dive course from Discover scuba diving to Divemaster.
Dive instructor theory forms the foundation of teaching professional diving knowledge, covering key areas like dive physics, physiology, equipment, and dive planning. It delves into topics such as pressure, buoyancy, gas laws, and the effects of depth on the body. Understanding these principles is essential for ensuring diver safety, effective teaching, and the ability to mentor dive students.
The IDC course is a 14 day training program. This period includes both theory, pool and ocean components, with hands-on experience in the water, time with staff instructors and the course director to master diving safety and your teaching skills.
We keep our IDC courses small with additional staff participating to create simulations for you to learn from. This setup lets us give each IDC candidate plenty of attention, making sure you get the most out of your training. You’ll always be under the direct supervision of our Pro instructor team so you can enjoy a truly personalized and transformative diving experience.
During a PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), diving activities focus on enhancing teaching and leadership skills. Candidates participate in confined water and open water sessions, where they practice presenting and demonstrating key skills required for training future divers.
